Grammar Checker Software Review

I read a report recently saying that over 65% of business correspondence had grammar errors, but what was more disturbing was that it also said that having grammar errors in their writing had caused people to be passed over for promotions, lose contracts and even lose their jobs…

That really got my attention…I’ve never thought of bad grammar having that affect, and since I was never any good at grammar at school, it got me kind of worried.

The good news is that my writing has improved greatly over the last few months, and it’s because I started using a “real” grammar checker instead of that piece of junk in Microsoft Word. I feel more confident that when I send something out, the reader isn’t going to think of me a some kind of “grammar-loser”, and that my grammar (or lack thereof) won’t impact my career in any way.

But, there was no way I was paying for a grammar checker

After reading the grammar report, I decided to look into grammar checkers. Since the grammar checker in Word is free, I felt kind of ripped off when I saw that you actually have to buy grammar checkers!

Having said that, I suppose with Word’s grammar checker, you get what you pay for because that grammar checker is piece of you-know-what.

So before going out and buying another piece of software, I thought that I should try and re-learn the basics of grammar instead of shelling out for more software.

Grammar Girl
The Grammar Girl is a podcast of grammar tips you can download on to your iPod. The tips are good, but I listen to my iPod when I workout or go to bed, and the last thing I wanted to hear in either case was advice on grammar.

The Grammar Bible
I checked this out of the local library, but as I picked it up I had that same feeling as I had back in my school days with grammar. Despite my good intentions, I knew there was no way I’d read it. So I promptly put it back on the shelf.

Grammar Checker Software
I found two grammar checkers, WhiteSmoke and StyleWriter, that seemed to be getting all the accolades so I checked them out.

WhiteSmoke Grammar Checker
I really liked this product because it was so easy to use and worked with everything I wrote. It fixed the errors I seemed to make most of the tie like “it’s” instead of “its”, missing words and even commas. I never can figure out where to put a comma and I’m happy for WhiteSmoke to do it for me.

I also liked that it grammar checks letters and emails, web pages, in fact it works with any application you write with which is way cool

That part was good because I’d never thought of the grammar mistakes I might have been making in emails, where I do most of my business communication. The price of $79 was also good (OK, no price is good for me, but I guess I have to pay something).

StyleWriter, more for the power writer
This is like the Mercedes of grammar checkers. Awfully powerful, but more than the average person needs. It seems like it’s more for the professional writer because it does stuff like give you reports on your grammar errors in different drafts of your documents so you can see who much your grammar has improved.

Whereas WhiteSmoke fixed your grammar without pushing grammar down your throat, I always felt with StyleWriter that I was getting a grammar lesson at the same time – and I have too many bad memories of doing grammar at school to want that experience again.

Now I don’t worry about grammar any more
The best grammar checker in terms of price, ease of use, and accuracy is WhiteSmoke grammar checker. There’s no question about it. I just wish Microsoft would buy it and put it into Microsoft Word, so it would be free, but for now you have to buy it.

I’m using it every time I write. I’m not risking any aspect of my career on having bad grammar and I’m as sure as heck having my kids use it when they write their college essays.

StyleWriter installs as both an add-on for Microsoft Word and as a standalone application. If you regularly use MS Word as your editor you can click the icon in the Word toolbar to start StyleWriter’s analysis. If you use another editor you’ll need to start StyleWriter separately, and you may need to paste your document into the app.

Using MS Word or a similar word processor that supports DDE is the preferred method, though, as StyleWriter uses DDE (dynamic data interchange) to connect to your word processor. StyleWriter can use DDE interactively to apply changes it suggests directly to your document, and will even get out of the way so you can edit the document directly.

You can also use StyleWriter with any other application by copying your text to the Windows Clipboard. This does however make the process more cumbersome since StyleWriter’s changes can’t be automatically applied. In this case you will need to make the edits manually based on StyleWriter’s instructions. It would be helpful if the program had a more generic link and could be used directly with any Windows-based editor.

So how is StyleWriter different than your average word processor?

All word processors can check your spelling, and most will even review your grammar and suggest changes, but StyleWriter goes beyond that. When StyleWriter is started from its icon in the Word taskbar it performs a preliminary analysis of your document and scores it on three criteria — average sentence length, number of passive verbs used, and overall style.

Different document types use different styles. For example, research papers have distinctly different styles than press releases. StyleWriter offers several choices for the type of document to be checked, including general writing, newsletter, resumé, cover letter, technical report, instructions, and general letter. Selecting the type of document you’ll be checking loads StyleWriter’s basic analytical parameters.

Besides checking sentence length and the number of passive verbs, StyleWriter’s style indexes check for a wide variety of common editorial issues like misused words, confused words, complex words, jargon, abstract words, hyphenation, overused words, legal words, sexist writing, clichés, grammar, and redundancies. And it goes even farther and does some of the same things a human editor would look for, such as overwriting, foreign words, sentence structure check, and even preferred spelling.

StyleWriter – Statistical Summary

After loading and scanning your document against the active parameters, three grades are shown ranging from “horrid” to “excellent.”

That’s when the fun starts.

StyleWriter works like an inline spell checker in that it identifies and highlights each of the offending items that contributed to the high score, then offers advice on fixing each problem. The word or phrase that was identified as violating the rule and the suggestions for repairing the problem are displayed in the Advice window. Many changes can be applied by simply clicking the suggested fix. For example, StyleWriter identified the word “authorized” as a Complex Word, and suggested using “let, allowed, approved, or sanctioned” instead. Simply clicking “allowed” replaced the word in the main document and moved to the next offender.

Some changes require editing the document directly, wherein StyleWriter automatically minimizes after clicking the Edit button so you can make your changes manually.

In addition to making your documents easier to read using its built-in rules, you can also create your own set of House Rules checked by StyleWriter to ensure that documents adhere to them. For example, if your company has standardized on the spelling “e-mail,” StyleWriter can check for offending spellings like email, eMail, or Email, and suggest they be changed. The other parameters that control sentence length and passive verbs can also be modified to suit the company’s preferences.

Tell me More Language Learning Software Review

This Language Learning Software Review is based on my own experience with the TeLL me More Language Software. I wrote this Review to give you an overview of the Tell me More Language Software.The installation of TeLL me More software is easy. It only took me about 2 minutes to finish the installation process. After installation, you can then remove the installation disk and insert one course CD (either beginner, intermediate, or advance CD) into your CD-ROM.

One of the nice features that TeLL me More offers is its use of speech recognition. The make the program highly interactive. The use of speech recognition help the learner interact with the program to learn correct pronunciation. (For you to use this feature, a headset/microphone combo comes with the package.)

The other nice feature is that, during most of the lessons, if you see a word that you do not understand, you can click on it to find out its translation and pronunciation.

The three study modes (Guided Mode, Free-to-Roam Mode, Dynamic Mode) are very effective in helping your language learning.

The software is running a little bit slow on my machine, sometimes when I clicked on something, it might take 5 seconds for the screen to be loaded completely. However, this in general does not annoy me during my use of the software. [Note: there is background noise (I mean music) when you run the software. The noise can be turned off if you want.]

The TeLL me More language software actually received numerous awards. See above for a few of them.

This software is basically a series of exercises. I’m sure it’s great if you are working in a classroom setting towards Chinese proficiency, but it’s basically a $175 paper weight (and free headphone / microphone) if you don’t already have a good basic knowledge of the chinese language.

The exercises themselves seem pretty good — nice layout, easy to understand, and generally pretty useful. The fatal flaw though remains the lack of instruction. The software functions much more effectively as a series of quizzes than as a tool to improve one’s ability.

For the record, I speak three languages fluently. If I may be so bold, I don’t think that it’s operator error.

About 18 months ago we bought this prior to our Asia trip. It was nearly incomprehensible before we left, and I convinced myself I was missing something or was impatient. After our return and several hours of “discovery” as described by others it was clear level 1 has no guided instruction to speak of.

We’re going back to Asia, and I found myself today looking for a deal on Rosetta Stone or Fluenz. That’s when I was reminded by that burning in my gut for having paid retail for this product. It makes me mad because we’ve dropped about $400 on this and other tools to this point and there is a severe lack of methodology, so let me point people to the closest, most informed thing I’ve discovered related to Chinese instruction. On the web site “doubting to shua” you will find a lot of discussion of Chinese instruction products.

I may try Rosetta Stone, but I am really beginning to believe an online college course is going to be the only thing with satisfactory structure for someone who wants to speak and read. I will say Pimsleur’s cheap level one (8 disc, 16 lesson) introduction has been the best learning tool so far. We are 100% on the four tonal influences after that. I was also able to get us onto the correct bus in Taipei as a result. Native speakers can’t always succeed getting the right bus.

Fortunately, China is the largest English speaking country in the world, and they treat you like a rock star when you earnestly attempt to communicate in Chinese. To be fair I’m, going to do what I should have done 18 months ago. I’m going to write Tell Me More and find out if there is an update with guidance. If there was some guidance I believe this could be the best product out there. At the same time I also can’t figure out what the three images have to do with the word you are matching. I was pretty successful in the first Myst trilogy and I do nothing but problem solving for a living, but I couldn’t break the code on this product.

Maybe this is a test and NSA is going to pop up with a giant signing bonus and license to kill for the first person to decipher this product. If so, it probably won’t be me because I’ll be hiring a personal tutor and going to language school when we go back to Asia.

Rocket Language Chinese Learning Software

I have so many things to say about Rocket Chinese I don’t know where to start. How about the beginning…

I have been interested in learning Chinese for a year now. I have five programs, three I obtained for free and two I paid for. Of the three I found for free, one came from my local library, I didn’t feel bad about making a copy because they are public domain, two I down loaded from the Internet and there was no charge.

They are all good programs, I know because I am very critical and skeptical due to the numbers of programs available, I felt I could go broke trying to find a good teaching program for learning Chinese.

Of the two programs that I bought one was from a University and one is the Rocket Chinese language course. The one from the University is good, but I expected much more form a University language course and it is no where near as comprehensive as Rocket Chinese, but to keep things honest, I paid less for the University course. I feel fortunate to have found Rocket Chinese and I bought the course after being my usual skeptical critical self, and partaking in the Rocket Chinese free sample lessons. After the sample lessons I was hooked and I am still.

The greatest benefit for me was the grammar part, because in the other lessons if the person I was trying to communicate with did not follow the sentence structure of the course material, I was totally lost. With Rocket Chinese I learned how the sentence were structured so I could then structure my own sentences, wow what a difference, oh yes, I still have a ways to go, but I am no longer a parrot, I’m a student. For the first time I feel like I can go to class, My computer that is, study and then go out into the world and apply what I have learned.

So what will you get out of the Rocket Chinese learning package, I don’t know that’s up to you. what I want to tell you is, learn from the year I spent searching for a complete learning course that will give you a fun exciting way to learn Chinese in a class room like setting and then start speaking Chinese right away and increase you knowledge at your own pace. You will learn the words, the sentence structure, the characters, and the culture of China so you will understand why you are saying the words you are saying.

I do not think you could possibility find a better choice for learning Chinese and you will not waste your time or money searching for what you want, Rocket Chinese has it all.

ChinesePod features five different levels of podcasts, Newbie, Elementary, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. Personally, the Elementary level fits me quite nicely. Each lesson ranges from about 10-18 minutes long. Although I had never been a paying member, I have been a subscriber to their free podcasts via iTunes for a long time. Unfortunately, I just noticed recently though that their iTunes feed is no longer including any of the upper level podcasts, only their newbie ones. It’s kind of a shame, but I guess they have to pay the bills.
